Deadline: March 31, 2017
In conjunction with the Cornell Symposium: Hospitality, Health, and Design, Service Industries Journal is pleased to announce a call for papers that coincides with the Symposium’s theme. The Special Issue topic: The Intersection of Hospitality, Health, and Design, is open to all researchers and practitioners, across a wide variety of disciplines.
Although the words “hospitality” and hospital” invoke very different emotions, they stem from the same root word in Latin, hospes, meaning “guest” or “host.” Although the hospitality and healthcare industries have evolved quite differently over the centuries, they continue to share many common characteristics. For example, both services need to take care of the unique needs of their guests by proving comfortable lodging, meals, privacy / security, and many other amenities and supplementary services. Each industry can provide unique opportunities for learning by companies operating in the other because of evolving customer preferences / business dynamics, and changing regulations and policies. Many new industry segments are emerging at the interface of hospitality and healthcare – they include senior housing and care; wellness and medical tourism; and concierge medicine; to name a few.
Topics for this special include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
- Applications of hospitality theories and frameworks to healthcare services or design, at an individual, practitioner, or societal level.
- Applications of healthcare services planning frameworks or practices to hospitality services
- Applications for novel services marketing applications to hospitality and/or healthcare services design and/or implementation
- “Servicescape” design issues and hospitality/ health implications
- Applications of leisure science theories to healthcare services or design
Researchers are also encouraged to explore international, cross-cultural implications as well as to healthcare implications among consumers at the “bottom-of-the-pyramid.”
