CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A SPECIAL ISSUE OF PSYCHOLOGY & MARKETING

The Sharing Economy: Psychological Mechanisms that Affect Collaborative Consumption

Deadline: April 30, 2019.

Editor: Giampaolo Viglia

Sharing economy platforms may be categorized in varied ways, but all share a common goal of online facilitation of the exchange of goods and/or services. These platforms may focus on the exchange and recirculation of goods (e.g., eBay), the exchange of services (e.g., Task Rabbit, Zaarly), the increased utilization of durable assets (e.g., Airbnb, Uber), and/or the sharing of financial and productive assets (e.g., TransferWise, Skillshare). Consumer receptivity to such platforms is self-evident based on their growth and usage, but the psychological and cultural reasons accounting for the success of each such platform remains largely unexplored to date.

This Special Issue will focus on the motives and cultural influences that draw consumers into the sharing economy. A partial listing of sample questions that contributors may wish to address in this regard would include:
* What type(s) of consumers are motivated by economic factors, novelty, or trendiness of platforms used in the sharing economy?

* Do platforms alienate those who use non-digital sharing practices in their daily lives?
* What are the social aspects that facilitate exchanges in the sharing economy?
* Do platforms deliver durable social ties in the sharing economy?
* Are there ideological factors (e.g., collectivism vs. individualism) that motivate consumers to participate in the sharing economy?

* How are trust, reciprocity, and reputation developed and maintained in the sharing economy? * How do consumers deal with uncertainty, risks, misbehaviors, and service failures in the sharing economy?
* How do the psychological mechanisms at play in traditional business models and those in the sharing economy compare? What do they have in common? How do they differ?

All manuscripts directed to answering these and related questions will be considered by the Special Issue Guest Editor, Giampaolo Viglia (giampaolo.viglia@port.ac.uk). To submit a manuscript, please follow the manuscript submission guidelines as detailed under “Instructions to Authors” on the Wiley Psychology & Marketing website (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/15206793/homepage/forauthors.html). Address your cover letter to Richard J. Harnish, Psychology & Marketing Special Issues Editor, and note in your cover letter that your manuscript is being submitted for consideration for publication in the “Sharing Economy” Special Issue. The deadline for submitting manuscripts for this Special Issue is April 30, 2019.
