About the Journal

The Service Industries Journal (SIJ), an international journal of service management, exists to improve our knowledge of service industries, service businesses and the effective management of services. This multidisciplinary journal was established in 1981 as the first academic peer reviewed journal in the world devoted to services and service management. Since then, it has established a first class international reputation for the quality of its articles.

The SIJ publishes research that contributes to the development of theory and resulting best practices in services, including management, human resources, operations, marketing, entrepreneurship, innovation, finance, and internet-related and interdisciplinary approaches.

Contributions are welcomed from around the globe and those that offer socially responsible viewpoints are particularly encouraged.

The SIJ is ranked in the Management category of the SSCI, with a 2015 Impact Factor of 0.776 and a 5-Year Impact Factor of 1.071.

Job Description

We are seeking an Editor-in-Chief or Editorial team to drive the strategy for The Service Industries Journal, working to enhance the impact and reputation of the Journal. The Editor-in-Chief / Editorial team will manage the peer review process, selecting high quality papers to publish.

Taylor & Francis will provide an annual contribution to expenses incurred by the Editor-in-Chief / Editorial team.

Key Tasks

The tasks to be undertaken will include but will not be limited to:

  • Working with Taylor & Francis and the Editorial Board to develop the editorial strategy and direction of the SIJ and acting as an ambassador for the Journal;
  • Attendance and networking at international conferences and events to promote the SIJ and solicit submissions, invited contributions, and special issue proposals;
  • Responsibility for enhancing the quality and reputation of the SIJ, particularly in relation to the quantity, quality and timeliness of published research;
  • Commissioning topical special issues with active, well-respected Guest Editors;
  • Day-to-day manuscript and peer review management including; desk screening of submissions, allocation of submissions to the Associate Editors, and making final decisions on papers;
  • Ensuring that all reviewers and authors uphold the Journal’s code of publishing ethics;
  • Oversight of the Editorial Office, several Associate Editors and the Editorial Board;
  • Refreshing the Associate Editors, Editorial Board and pool of reviewers as necessary in terms of subject specialisms and geographical representation;
  • Organising one Editorial Board meeting annually, also attended by Taylor & Francis. 

Candidate Experience

We are seeking an outstanding and professional academic, or team of academics, actively involved in the disciplines covered by the SIJ, with an international reputation for research excellence, and a passion for communication. Prior experience of editing an established Business and Management journal is preferred.

Applicants should be actively involved in networks within the field. Key qualities sought for the position include energy, enthusiasm, managerial skills to oversee the editorial cycle, an understanding of research and publishing ethics, and the ability to meet deadlines and work effectively with a major publisher. Applicants should have clear employer or institutional support for this activity for the duration of the three year appointment, including release time as necessary and general office support.
