SERVSIG’s Got Talent: Showcasing the Next Generation of Service Scholars at the 2019 Summer AMA!
Session Chair: Martin Mende, SERVSIG Program Officer, Associate Professor of Marketing, Florida State University.
Session Goal and Format:
- The purpose of this SERVSIG session at 2019 Summer AMA is to feature the research accomplishments of doctoral students who (1) are working in the area of service (broadly defined) and (2) who are “approaching the job market” (i.e., students can be in their 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th year of their PhD program). We are open to a wide variety of service-related topics and research methods. We hope to receive proposals not only from students in North America but also in South America, Asia and Australasia, Europe, as well as Africa.
- While participants will give a brief presentation of their research, the objective of this session is to create an interactive and positive environment that provides doctoral students with (1) helpful feedback and (2) a platform for networking in a formal and informal setting.
- SERVSIG faculty will provide the students with constructive feedback related to their research and, if desired, provide advice on their upcoming job market journey.
- To further reinforce the idea of a ‘positive and festive’ session, we will reserve the final 5-10 minutes for (1) hosting a ‘celebratory group toast’ (beverages provided by SERVSIG) and (2) taking a group photo of ‘SERVSIG’s Talent’ to be distributed afterwards.
Submission and Selection:
- Students who want to be considered for this session are asked to submit a proposal to Martin Mende at mmende@fsu.edu by June 1, 2019. Students will be informed by June 15, 2019 whether their proposal has been selected. For details about registration for the conference, please see https://www.ama.org/events/2019-ama-summer-academic-conference/
- Proposals should list the student’s name, school, year in program, advisor (s) (if applicable), and a 300-500 word abstract that details the research focus as well as the methodological approach and the status of the research (e.g., are any data collected?).
- SERVSIG will select an appropriate number of presenters for this session format. Note that the SERVSIG team will work hard to be inclusive and provide a platform for as many students as possible. For example, we might invite between 5 – 8 participants (with a ‘7-minute lightning talk’ format to include more presenters).
- Please contact Martin Mende (mmende@fsu.edu) with any questions related to this session – we are looking forward to receiving your submission!
