CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A SPECIAL ISSUE OF JOURNAL OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM RESEARCH
Laboratory Based Methodological Innovations in Tourism and Hospitality Research
Guest Editors: Dr. Gabby Walters and Dr. Shanshi Li
Abstracts due: January 31, 2019
This special issue will focus on the application of laboratory-based methodological innovations in tourism and hospitality. These methodological innovations include an array of technological devices capable of measuring psycho-physiological responses such as electro dermal activity; blood pressure; heart rate; eye movement; brain activity. The technology becoming available to us is moving at a rapid pace and this special issue would invite contributions from academics using such techniques to showcase the capabilities, challenges and benefits for tourism and hospitality research.
The application of lab-based methods such as the physiological measures mentioned above is becoming increasingly popular among tourism and hospitality scholars and the body of literature in this field continues to grow. The recent emergence of affordable and relatively accessible psycho-physiological equipment has led to significant advancements in the study of consumer behaviour in the hospitality and tourism setting. Physiological measures can overcome the criticisms of self-report studies that rely primarily on the respondent’s subjective self-assessment of emotion and other evaluative measures by eliminating cognitive bias or socially desirable responses. Psychophysiological measurement techniques can record participants’ bodily reactions to stimuli, and thus do not rely on an individual’s ability to verbalize their cognitive or emotional responses. Unlike self-report measures that can only capture a consumer’s response at a given moment in time, psychophysiological techniques provide moment-to-moment information on an individual’s psychological state.
This special edition offers a platform for tourism and hospitality scholars to apply such methods to address both case specific and broad issues in the field of tourism and hospitality. Submissions that adopt these methods to advance or challenge existing theories or knowledge in the tourism and hospitality field will be also be welcomed. Papers must present industry implications that not only highlight the benefits of such methods to practice but also showcase the innovative research practices being employed within academia.
Key Themes to be covered in the special edition include (but are not limited to)
The application of Eye Tracking Technology in tourism and hospitality research
EDA and Muscle Movement and the measurement of emotion
Face Scanning technology
The use of EEG
Robotics
Gamification and tourist behaviour
The use of VR and Augmented reality in tourism research
Submission Guidelines
Papers submitted must not have been published, accepted for publication, or be under review for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should be prepared according to the journal’s “Submission Guidelines” (https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/journal/journal-hospitality-tourism-research#submission-guidelines)
Initially, one-page abstracts should be submitted directly to the ScholarOne Manuscript platform (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jhtr) by Jan. 31, 2019. When you choose the “Type,” be sure you select Special Edition: Lab Based Methodological Innovations. You can
enter your title and abstract in the designated fields, then we are asking for a Word document with only your abstract be uploaded in the files section. You can use the “Main Document” designation. Simply enter zero for the numbers of figures, tables, and words where prompted.
The abstracts will be reviewed by both editors, and those that make a significant contribution and fit the theme of the special issue will be invited for full paper submission. Full papers should be submitted by July 30, 2019 through the journal’s online system. All papers will be peer reviewed before possible inclusion in the special issue.
