It is a unique and dedicated platform that fosters research, publications and cross-country collaborations among service researchers. Since its inception in 2010\u00a0as part of the Service Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) Initiative, the symposium has been attracting researchers from all over the world. The popularity of the symposium is demonstrated by the fact that the lineup of host countries is already decided till 2024.<\/p>\n<p>With the theme,<em> \u201cService Imperatives in the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,\u201d<\/em> the 10th symposium in the IRSSM series attempts to explore the latest developments in the field of service management.\u00a0Spread over four days, the event started with a research workshop on Day 1, and continued with the 3-day symposium in which research papers were presented by the participants from 24 countries in two parallel tracks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8808 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/72667621_10157638327842953_8252481859116597248_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/72667621_10157638327842953_8252481859116597248_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/72667621_10157638327842953_8252481859116597248_n-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/72667621_10157638327842953_8252481859116597248_n-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Symposium Research Workshop (October 6th)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe research workshop aimed at strengthening the research foundations. It was chaired by Dr. Kandampully and facilitated with experts from some of the top universities in the world (i.e. Drs.\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\">Choi,\u00a0Ball,\u00a0Alkire,\u00a0Bove,\u00a0<\/span>van Riel,\u00a0Beldona, Durvasula, Kunz, and Benoit).<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8804 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71376605_10157007440808717_6085328575160909824_n-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71376605_10157007440808717_6085328575160909824_n-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71376605_10157007440808717_6085328575160909824_n.jpg 641w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Day 1 of Symposium (October 7th): Inauguration, keynote speeches, and research papers\u2019 presentations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Then, <strong>Dr. James Trotter<\/strong> (Dean and Academic Vice President, Murdoch University) welcomed the participants to the symposium. <strong>Dr. Madhavi Ayyagari<\/strong> (Symposium co-chair) who shared the thought that went into the choice of the IRSSM10 Theme (<em>Service Management in the Era of Industrial Revolution 4<\/em>):\u00a0The breakthroughs in the digital era through Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and the Internet of everything have made a significant difference to our work and daily lives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-8807\" src=\"http:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71930448_10157007441413717_8681297325299073024_n-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>The symposium started with two keynotes from\u00a0practicing professionals. First, <strong>Mr. Arnaud Van Rietschoten<\/strong> (VP, IT Service Management &amp; Digital workplace, Emirates Airlines) talked about \u00a0<em>&#8220;How to keep Aviation Information Technology in the Air 24X7!&#8221;<\/em> Arnaud traced the growth of Dubai from the 1950s till date and the envisaged future and the evolution of Emirates Airlines from its humble beginnings in 1985 to the present status of being the largest airline in the world by international revenue passenger kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>Second, <strong>Air Commodore Dusty Amroliwala<\/strong> (OBE MA MBA FCIPD,\u00a0COO, Attestation and Verification Services, VFS Global) talked about <em>&#8220;Facing down the scourge of Education Technofraud \u2013 An inevitable yet unwelcome consequence of the era of IR4&#8221;<\/em>.\u00a0Like many of the revolutions that preceded it, the promise made by many of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is that it has the potential to transform mankind \u2013 to higher levels of income, to improve the quality of lives for billions and to completely reinvent the manner in which services and products are deployed to bring greater efficiency and enjoyment to our lives.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8806 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71554093_10157638327837953_1807391859576668160_n-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71554093_10157638327837953_1807391859576668160_n-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71554093_10157638327837953_1807391859576668160_n.jpg 641w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/strong>Eventually, <strong>Dr. Jay Kandampully <\/strong>(Symposium Chair) reiterated that the mission of IRSSM is to develop research competence amongst young researchers and to build collaborative multi-country research networks. He urged the participants to focus on relationship building and the young researchers to seek guidance from senior researchers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2 of Symposium (October 8th ): Keynote speeches, and research papers\u2019 presentations<\/strong><br \/>\nFirst, <strong>Mr. Sanjay Sharma<\/strong>\u00a0(Head of Information Technology, Jumeirah Group) held a keynote called\u00a0<em>\u201cBeyond Digital\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0According to Sanjay, businesses today are competing for consumer\u2019s time and attention, data is the foundation of digital business, every touchpoint, every click, and every digital exhaust is a relevant insight. Thereafter, the second keynote was held by\u00a0<strong>Dr. Marie Ibrahim (<\/strong>Senior Research Executive, Dubai Health Care City Regulatory) on <em>\u201cHealthcare Regulation: Bridging the Gap between Research, Policy, and the Public\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0The age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and AI gave rise to the terms Data-Driven Policy and Data-Centric Policy which are slowly but surely replacing Evidence-Based Policy formulated on the basis of available evidence and rational analysis thereof.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8805 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71488019_10157638328122953_3962305556185612288_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71488019_10157638328122953_3962305556185612288_n.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71488019_10157638328122953_3962305556185612288_n-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/71488019_10157638328122953_3962305556185612288_n-768x621.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3 of Symposium (October 9th): Panel discussion followed by research papers\u2019 presentations<br \/>\n<\/strong>Dr. Kandampully chaired a panel discussion on\u00a0<em>&#8220;Publishing in Academic Journals&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0with the 8 panel members from the pre-symposium research workshop. The last day continued with presentations in six tracks:<br \/>\n\u2022 Artificial intelligence and Virtual Reality<br \/>\n\u2022 Methodology and measurement<br \/>\n\u2022 Review of research on smart tech in services<br \/>\n\u2022 Financial services<br \/>\n\u2022 Service time<br \/>\n\u2022 Service ecosystem<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8825 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-10-17-22.12.10-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-10-17-22.12.10-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-10-17-22.12.10-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.servsig.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/2019-10-17-22.12.10.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In the evening, a Gala Dinner was held on a cruise on the traditional boat known in Arabic as \u2018Dhow\u2019, and research awards were presented.\u00a0Ten <strong>Young Service Research Awards<\/strong> were given to encourage young service researchers from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mauritius and UAE. The award included a cash prize and commendation. Further, a <strong>Best Paper Award<\/strong> and three <strong>Highly Commended Paper Awards<\/strong> were also conferred to recognize and promote high-quality research \u2014 sponsored by <em>Journal of Service Management<\/em>\u00a0(and Emerald Publishing).
