The cost of violence has been estimated by the 2015 Global Peace Index at $43 trillion. Economic inequality, social injustice and political polarization represent key causes of political instability and violence, yielding serious implications for political institutions, businesses and the society. Unsurprisingly, there has been a major shift of academic and intergovernmental attention to issues related to the political environment and security, and more specifically, on the impacts of political instability on the business environment of the service industries. The political environment influences the performance and the operating context of service organisations, as political instability, insecurity and change impact the service industries at the sectoral level in a number of ways (i.e. influencing consumer confidence and perceptions of safety and security, changing regulatory contexts etc). In light of the current context of political change and volatility at the global level, this special issue invites papers from multi-disciplinary researchers to advance understanding of the relationship between the political environment, security and the service industries.

Submissions, from different epistemological and methodological transitions, related to the following topics (but not limited to) are particularly welcome:

Conceptualizations of the nexus between political instability, insecurity and services
Service trade and political environment
The regulatory environment for the service industries
Political change and the service industries
The service industries in policy formulation
Tourism and security issues
International trade in services
Political environment, security and technology
Educational service industries and peacebuilding
Global and regional integration and the political environment
Implications of service industries for international security issues
The political economy of service industries
Implications of the political environment to service industries’ performance and operations
Entrepreneurship and the political environment
Peacebuilding through CSR, tourism and other service activities
Service industries marketing and the political environment
Food safety and security in the service industries
Power dimensions in services and implications for political change and instability
Crisis and risk management in the service industries
Comparative analyses of the relationship between the political environment and services
Submission instructions

Researchers are invited to indicate their interest in contributing to this special issue by sending a 300-word abstract of their proposed paper by June, 30 2017 to Michael Hall by e-mail at michael.hall@canterbury.ac.nz

The deadline for full paper submission is December, 31 2017 for standard peer review.

Full instructions for authors are available at: http://www.tandfonline.com/action/authorSubmission?journalCode=fsij20&page=instructions

Publication for this special issue is autumn 2018.

Editorial information

Guest Editor: C.Michael Hall, University of Canterbury (michael.hall@canterbury.ac.nz)
Guest Editor: Anna Farmaki, Cyprus University of Technology (anna.farmaki@cut.ac.cy)
Editor-in-Chief: Levent Altinay, Oxford Brookes University (laltinay@brookes.ac.uk)

Special Issue of the Service Industries Journal Political Environment, Security, and the Service Industries proposed paper by June, 30 2017 full paper submission by December, 31 2017 Political turmoil, instability, terrorist attacks and civil unrest are indicative of the rise of violence in the world today.
