In this session, we will hear the challenges and insights these leaders faced in building organizations with a reputation for service excellence and financial success. In this article, we briefly introduce one of the roundtable participants, Adam Goldstein, President and Chief Operating Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.

Goldstein has had a long, highly successful career with Royal Caribbean. Prior to his current role, he was President & CEO of Royal Caribbean International. Goldstein has been employed with Royal Caribbean since 1988 in a variety of positions, including Senior Vice President of Total Guest Satisfaction, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Vice President of International Sales and Marketing; Director of Market Development and Corporate Secretary to Royal Caribbean’s Board of Directors.

When interviewed regarding Royal Caribbean’s ability to satisfy the multiple audiences the company serves, Goldstein notes: “We are constantly adapting our product to accomplish two things, in my opinion: staying true to our brand name while still tailoring our product to suit different cultures and audiences. First of all, no matter what the modification might be, we cannot detract from our ability to present ourselves as Royal Caribbean International around the world. Wherever we sail, we want to offer friendly, engaging service with first-rate entertainment, activities, and compelling youth programs for families, and we cannot have modifications that break those paradigms. On the other hand, since we cater to so many different nationalities, we have to offer tremendous language support and adjust our offerings to suit cultural demands. For instance, when we have a comedian onboard, we have to make adaptations so that the humor works for the guest audience sailing with us; if we are talking about offering cruises in Brazil, where our customers pretty much want nonstop entertainment, we have to make modifications that allow singing and dancing to go on throughout the day and far into the night; if you want to offer cruises in China, we have to put much more emphasis on bringing big time brand names like Cartier and IWC Watches into the environment of the ships that will be in China so that the shopping experience is up to their expectations.”[i]

When Goldstein started with Royal Caribbean, only around 3 million people were taking cruises—almost all of them Americans. Today, about 23 million people will take a cruise, with only about half of them being Americans. He observes, “The industry is seven to eight times bigger than it was when I started; our company is 14 times bigger than it was when I started. We have transitioned from being a niche vacation type to becoming a fairly rapidly emerging global vacation option.”[ii]

In reflecting on his long career with Royal Caribbean, Goldstein said, “Royal Caribbean was a five-ship company when I arrived here, and today we are many times larger than that. … The opportunity we have is to take even greater advantage of our global scale and knowledge, while delivering the guest satisfaction that helped us grow to where we are today.”[iii]

To learn more or submit an abstract (450 words) to the 2017 Frontiers in Service Conference please visit: https://frontiers2017.com/

REFERNECES

[i] http://www.forbes.com/sites/danschawbel/2015/03/06/adam-goldstein-the-growth-and-popularity-of-royal-caribbean/2/#39f94a311103

[ii] http://www.forbes.com/sites/danschawbel/2015/03/06/adam-goldstein-the-growth-and-popularity-of-royal-caribbean/#49309469d05a

[iii] http://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/category/category/adam-goldstein

Meet Frontiers 2017 Speaker Adam Goldstein, President and Chief Operating Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd The 2017 Frontiers in Service Conference June 22-25 in New York City opens with an Executive Roundtable of Presidents & CEOs internationally recognized as service leaders.
